I could call this recipe semi-homemade, but I think someone else has already pretty much claimed that description, so I chose faux. While the word means fake or phony and definitely describes the method used to achieve my “home-made” salsa, it does not describe the healthy ingredients that can be found inside this simple recipe. This recipe was something I learned before I had children, a time when I rarely cooked. I knew how to cook, but I wasn’t really interested in cooking. I had to think too much about it, so I resisted cooking. In fact, take out was my favorite way to prepare dinner. I am shocked when I realize how much money I probably wasted when I was first on my own.
This recipe, along with a bag of tortilla chips became the thing that I took to almost every pot luck I attended. Many people were convinced that I knew how to make delicious salsa, but in reality, I only knew how to doctor a jar of picante sauce. It was my friend, Celeste, who taught me this trick, and I have been forever grateful for the lesson.
One only needs to dump a jar of salsa into a bowl, add some chopped green (or red or brown or white) onions, a chopped fresh tomato, and some chopped cilantro. Mix it all up and most of your friends will be convinced that you know how to make some great salsa.

- 1 (16 oz) jar of picante sauce (mild, medium, or hot according to your tastes)
- 3 - 4 green onions thinly sliced (you can substitute ½ cup chopped onion instead)
- 1 medium tomato diced
- 2-3 tablespoons of chopped fresh cilantro
- Juice from ½ of a lime (optional)
- Pour salsa into a bowl.
- Add onions, tomato, cilantro, and lime juice (if using)
- Mix well
- Serve with tortilla chips.
