Easy Gluten-Free Apple Crisp

My Easy Apple Crisp recipe is very popular here at Patty Cake’s Pantry, and we eat it often.  I have a friend who can’t tolerate gluten, and we needed to bring a dessert to her for dinner.  I decided to see if I could modify my original Easy Apple Crisp to make  a gluten-free version.  It turns out that the modification was also pretty easy.  The recipe was a huge success, and because the filling is only apples, which become sweeter as they cook, it’s healthier than some other versions that include sugar in the filling.   We also swapped out the butter, or margarine, for heart healthy coconut oil.  (Our friend is allergic to dairy, too.)     Don’t worry, though. Our Easy Gluten Free Apple Crisp is so delicious that no one will suspect that it’s healthier than their usual apple pie.

The topping gets its flavor from the combination of cinnamon and nutmeg mixed with oats that are sweetened with a combination of real maple syrup and brown sugar.topping placed onto sliced applesThis is a definite crowd pleaser, and is a simple solution when you have a gluten-free friend coming to dinner.    To make it extra special, serve the warm crisp topped with a scoop of your favorite vanilla ice cream, frozen yogurt, or non-dairy ice cream.

Easy Gluten-Free Apple Crisp

A base of sliced apples is topped with an oatmeal streusel before baking. The result is a rich and flavorful dessert
  • 4 medium cooking apples, sliced (about 4 cups)
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1 cup quick oats (use gluten free oats if gluten is a concern)
  • ⅓ cup coconut oil or butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  2. Grease an 8X8 or 7X12 inch baking pan (use a square or small rectangular pan, not a round one)
  3. Arrange sliced apples on the bottom of the pan
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, maple syrup, oats, coconut oil, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  5. Blend well.
  6. Sprinkle the coconut oil, oat, and spice mixture over the apples.
  7. Bake for 30” at 350 degrees until the topping is golden and the apples are tender..
  8. For a delicious treat, serve warm with ice cream.
