Sum Gum is a simple and delicious combination of ground beef, green beans, rice, and Asian inspired seasonings, and it’s a perfect simple supper. The best part is that it can all be prepared in one skillet, as long as you have some leftover rice in the refrigerator. I love meals that don’t make a big mess, and they’re a real winner when my family likes it. This recipe definitely fit the bill.
Where did this recipe for Sum Gum come from?
I previously posted about my friend, Vicki, and a favorite food memory from her childhood, a dish that her mother called Sum Gum. I tried to make a variation of this recipe in the early days of Patty Cake’s Pantry, but it wasn’t quite right. In fact, the beef and green bean teriyaki recipe that I posted earlier this year was another attempt to recreate this dish for her. That recipe, like our first attempt at Sum Gum, wasn’t quite right. It’s taken almost three years, but I’ve finally perfected her childhood favorite. It turns out that I was making this recipe too complicated. When I simplified the ingredients, and the cooking instructions, we had a winner.
What you will need to prepare Sum Gum:
From the Refrigerator:
- Ground Beef
From the Pantry:
- Cut Green Beans
- Soy Sauce
- Granulated Garlic
- Black Pepper
- White Rice
In case this recipe, or it’s name, offends anyone, we would like to apologize. This recipe is so named “Sum Gum” because that’s what Vicki’s Mom called in in the 1970’s. It’s not authentic Asian cuisine, but is is authentic to the type of home cooked meal someone would make in the middle of the 20th century, It’s also good eats. (Aplogies to Alton Brown, again.)
