Glorified Rice is a simple recipe made from cold, cooked rice. Just a few pantry ingredients transform rice into an easy dessert. The total cost of the recipe is $3.31 without maraschino cherries or about $0.42 per serving. The addition of a full jar of maraschino cherries increases the cost per recipe to $4.56 or about $0.57 per serving.
  • 2 cups cooked chilled rice that was cooked in water, or lightly salted water, only. (1 cup raw) ($0.50)
  • ¼ cup sugar ($0.08)
  • 1 (20 ounce) can of crushed pineapple, undrained ($0.99)
  • 1 to 1½ cups miniature marshmallows (white or fruit flavored, both work equally well). ($0.75)
  • 8 ounces heavy cream, whipped (Or you can substitute an 8 ounce container of frozen whipped topping) ($0.99)
  • Maraschino Cherries (optional) ($1.25)
  1. Place cold, cooked rice in a large mixing bowl and sprinkle with sugar
  2. Add pineapple to bowl and stir until well combined.
  3. Fold in marshmallows and cream.
  4. Maraschino cherries can be quartered and stirred into the mixture or can be arranged, whole or halved, on top of the serving bowl. (I usually just drop one on top of each serving.)
