Spaghetti Bolognese with Mushrooms

A simple and delicious version of spaghetti Cook's note: This recipe calls for a pouch of precooked shelf stable ground beef. If you can't find this ingredient, or don't want to buy it, use ½ to 1 pound of regular ground beef. This beef will need to be cooked and then drained of excess fat before adding the onion and garlic and proceeding with the recipe. Total Cost of Recipe = $9.51 or less than $1.56 per serving.
  • 1 (16 ounce) package spaghetti ($0.98)
  • 1 (10.6 ounce) foil pouch of shelf stable ground beef ($4.88)
  • ½ medium onion, diced ($0.11)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced ($0.03)
  • 24 ounce can spaghetti sauce ($0.88)
  • 1 (7 ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained ($0.89)
  • Parmesan cheese for topping (optional) ($1.74)
  1. Cook spaghetti according to package directions.
  2. While water heats on stove, heat ground beef in a pan with onion and garlic.
  3. Saute until onions are translucent.
  4. Add spaghetti sauce and bring to a boil. Simmer for 5 - 10 minutes
  5. Add sliced mushrooms to sauce and stir well to incorporate.
  6. Bring to boil again.
  7. Serve sauce over drained spaghetti noodles
  8. Sprinkle with grated parmesan cheese (optional) before serving.
