How Do You Make Self Rising Flour?

Self Rising Flour is a great time saver in recipes like pancakes, waffles, biscuits, and quick breads.  In fact, self rising flour was probably the first convenience food. It was developed by a baker from Bristol England back in 1840’s. His name was Henry Jones. The patented recipe for self rising flour even won a gold medal, and it ultimately changed the diet of sailors as it allowed them to have access to fresh bread throughout their travels instead of having to rely on hardtack (a hard, unleavened, biscuit).

I am thankful for Mr Jones’ invention. In addition to all of the items mentioned above, I have also used it in place of commercial biscuit mix when I’m making dishes like my cheeseburger pie or it’s Southwestern cousin. I love the convenience of having self rising flour in my pantry, but what happens when you’ve run out and you don’t want to go to the stores. Do you sit around and lament your situation? NO!

Making Self Rising Flour at home is simple.

As long as you have some all purpose flour, baking powder and salt on hand, it’s simple to whip up a batch of self rising flour. Once you’ve go all of the ingredients mixed together, store the self rising flour in a jar, or other airtight container and use it in any recipe that calls for self rising flour.

Self Rising Flour

Self Rising Flour is flour that is premixed with a leavening agent and salt. It's simple to prepare and a very convenient ingredient to have in your pantry. This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled or…. Mix up enough to have a supply on hand for your favorite recipes.

Servings 2 cups

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all purpose flour ($0.42)
  • 1/2 tsp salt ($0.01)
  • 1 tbsp baking powder ($0.11)

Instructions
 

  • Spoon flour into measuring cup and level with a spoon. Do NOT scoop with the measuring cup as this packs the flour.
  • Add baking powder and salt to flour mixture.
  • Stir with a whisk or spoon for several minutes until well combined.
  • Store in a covered container and use in recipes calling for self rising flour.
