Asparagus is one of my all time favorite vegetables. Grilling asparagus brings out the flavor and adds a smokiness to this delicious vegetable that makes it irresistible. This is Baker’s Man’s favorite vegetable, and he loves to have it either grilled or roasted in the oven. Since we are still experiencing summer heat, we opted to grill our Asparagus.
As a child, I didn’t eat asparagus often, but it was always a staple on our Easter table. As college students, Baker’s Man and I ate canned asparagus when we could find it on sale, but it’s not the same as the fresh stuff.
Grilling asparagus is easy, and if you haven’t tried it, we strongly recommend that you give it a try. It’s delicious, and unlike the bacon wrapped version, there will be no flair ups on your grill caused by dripping grease. For this recipe, you need thicker asparagus spears and bamboo skewers that have been soaked in water for about 30 minutes. Trim off the bottom of the spears and insert bamboo skewers through the asparagus, arranging them in rows with the skewers perpendicular to the asparagus.
Brush the asparagus with olive oil and sprinkle with coarse sea salt or kosher salt and place it on the grill with the asparagus spears crossing the grate on your grill so that the spears won’t fall through the rack. Grill for about 5 minutes on each side or until the asparagus is tender.
Serve as an accompaniment to your favorite meat at your next barbecue. We know you’ll love this as much as we do.
Thanks for visiting Patty Cake’s Pantry.
- 32 medium sized asparagus spears
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- ½ teaspoon kosher or coarse sea salt
- 4 bamboo skewers soaked in water for 30 minutes
- Trim the bottoms off of asparagus spears
- Arrange asparagus in rows of 8 spears.
- Carefully insert two skewers into each row of asparagus spears, pushing them through across the spears as in the photos above.
- Once eight spears are on the skewers, and pushed to the end of the skewer, cut the extra skewer off and reserve the pointed end. You will use this for the next bundle.
- Once you have assembled 4 sets of 8 asparagus spears, you are ready for the next step.
- Brush the asparagus on each side with the olive oil and then sprinkle with salt.
- Arrange asparagus skewers on the grill and grill over medium heat for about 5 minutes on each side, or until the asparagus is tender.

I love the taste and crunch of grilled asparagus. Thank you, Patty. As you know, I prefer recipes with few ingredients. I prepare asparagus skewers on the grill with fish or meat. When I add corn on the coals and grilled tomatoes or red peppers, our meal is simple, colorful….and healthy.
Brenda, that sounds like a delicious combination. We don’t grill fish often. I think I should recommend to Baker’s Man that we grill fish this weekend. Thanks for the great idea!
