Sweet and Spicy Snack Mix

Sweet and Spicy Snack Mix

It’s fun to make your own snack mixes, and I really like this Sweet and Spicy Snack Mix.   I love mixing together different combinations of flavors to create the perfect snack mix, but my favorite part of creating these snack  mixes is seeing the reactions of friends and family as they sample my new creation.  This recipe began with a bag of Ding Dong.  I’m not referring to Ding Dongs, the cream filled and chocolate covered snack cakes.  This is an entirely different Ding Dong.  This particular Ding Dong is a sweet and spicy, snack mix that is popular in the Philippines.

Sweet and Spicy Snack MixMy friend, Aimee, had received a bag of Ding Dong from a relative who was visiting from the Philippines.  She allowed me to taste it, and I fell in love at first bite.  (If you visit my site regularly, you may realize that this is a chronic problem for me with new foods, and it may account for my pants being a little tight around the middle.)  I really enjoyed the contrast between the different components of the sweet and spicy flavored Ding Dong mix.  Did I mention that it was sweet and spicy?  Each bite enticed me to eat more.  It was addictive.

My first thought was to head to the Filipino grocery stores and buy some more, but I couldn’t.  I was informed that this particular flavor of Ding Dong was not available in the U.S.    I was sad, but I wasn’t ready to surrender.  I carefully analyzed the ingredients on the bag, and decided that I could make something similar.    So, I went to the store, gathered my ingredients, and began mixing.Sweet and Spicy Snack Mix

The final result wasn’t exactly the same as the bagged Ding Dong, but it had a similar flavor profile.  The original had peas without wasabi, and the spicy chip held the heat.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t find plain peas, and there were no flaming hot chili cheese fritos to be found anywhere.

I really liked this combination of flavors, and so did my family.  Since it’s my habit to take these snack mixes to work with me and allow my coworkers to sample them,  I received many opinions.  Aimee, the friend who had introduced me to Sweet and Spicy Ding Dong, commented that she liked mine better than the original.  She said that it was different, but she really liked it.  Of course,  she’s a very polite person.  I doubt she would say anything bad even if she thought it was nasty; however, everyone who tasted it, reported that they liked the combination, so I would call the recipe a success.  In fact, it’s almost as addictive as the original.Sweet and Spicy Snack Mix
